Google Starts Selling Nexus One in Competition With iPhone

Google Inc. has started selling a version of its Nexus One phone that runs on AT&T Inc.'s 3G network, putting it in direct competition with Apple Inc.'s iPhone.
The original version of Google's phone, which was released in early January and is still on sale, worked on Deutsche Telekom AG unit T-Mobile's 3G network and AT&T's older, slower network. The newer version, which became available for sale on Google's Web site Tuesday, supports the different frequencies that AT&T uses for 3G.

Enable Multitouch in Nexus One Web Browser

Like the Motorola Droid on Verizon, US version of Nexus One which was launched by Google earlier this month didn’t ship with a multitouch capable web browser even though the hardware and Android 2.1 OS is fully capable of doing it. This surely was a set back considering the fact that iPhone can do it since 2007. But now folks over at XDA-Developers have released a Nexus One add-on, which enables full multitouch functionality, including gestures like pinch-to-zoom in Nexus One’s native web browser.

This was possible because of the engineering bootloader which was shipped with pre-release Nexus One devices. The retail devices have locked bootloaders but Paul at Modaco forums has managed to unlock it so that you can root your retail Nexus One for full file system access on Android 2.1.

Estimate: Nexus One Sells Only 20,000 in First Week

The Google Nexus One, the much-hyped smartphone that has recently been plagued by user complaints, sold only about 20,000 units in its first week of sales, according to analytics firm Flurry. In comparison, the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless--the other Android phone that had been buzzed about in November--sold 250,000 in its first week. The T-Mobile myTouch 3G, an earlier Android device, sold 60,000 units in its first week.

Nexus One: You Can Look, You Can Buy, but You Can't Touch

Google altered the Android landscape this week by hosting the launch of the Nexus One, a phone built by HTC, and declaring itself the sole sales channel. Buyers will only be able to get one through a Google site, not via carrier stores or Web pages. Meanwhile, Apple showed up on the mobile ad scene, Chrome showed up Safari and Microsoft's Steve Ballmer showed up onstage at CES.

The 2009 holiday spirit seems to have faded for Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), who didn't waste much time getting back to the business of giving each other the stinkeye. First up was Google, which gave its Nexus One smartphone its first official public appearance.
