Sigma SD15 nabs a lofty price and near-term release date, at long last

All together now: "Finally!" Believe it or not, we first saw the SD15 glimmer back in September of 2008 -- practically an era ago based on what has transpired on our little planet since -- and we found out this February that Sigma was keeping the dream alive for the time being.

The VP8 video codec: High compression+low complexity

On2 VP8 achieves high compression with a bitstream that is less compute intensive to decode than either its predecessor (VP7) or competing technologies like H.264. Here's how it works.

Sony's NEX3 / 5 cameras priced, June release date leaked?

It looks like Sony's having a field day right now in Japan, making its official reveal of the NEX3 and NEX5 cameras, the "ultra-compact" DSLRs with interchangeable lenses we saw back at PMA. The presentation is going on as we speak, and the rumor sites seem to suggest Digital Photography School posted (and subsequently pulled) a review of the NEX3.

Sony EX3 prototype 3D camcorder spotted, destined for retail channels?

Well what do we have here? We've just been handed a picture of what we're told is Sony's EX3 prototype 3D camera, with changeable lenses and a penchant for capturing life in the third dimension. That's unfortunately all we really know at this point, but if this two-eyed beaut does go to market (and we hear that it most certainly will), it looks like Panasonic's 3D camcorder will have some healthy competition. And hey, we're all for having more options.

Canon AE-1 Program SLR gets a digital retrofit

A classic SLR film camera gutted and given a digital upgrade -- blasphemy? Maybe, but there's no denying that this mod by Diego Monge is plenty impressive. He started out with a Canon AE-1 Program SLR, and apparently simply stuffed the guts of a compact digital camera of some sort inside, resulting in what he calls the AE-1 Program Digital -- a 9-megapixel camera complete with image stabilization, a functional flash, and 4GB of memory (non-removable, it seems).

Polaroid returns to instant photography with the 300, thinks you'll pay a premium for it

Polaroid returns to instant photography with the 300, thinks
you'll pay a premium for it
When Polaroid left the instant film market back in 2008, it left a gaping hole that Impossible Project has attempted to fill with its overpriced reproduction paper. We're guessing someone at Polaroid saw that and thought: "Hey, why don't we charge too much for instant film, and make an overpriced camera to use it in?" And thus the $90 Polaroid 300 was born. Yes, $90 for the sort of instant point-and-shoot that, a few decades ago, you could pick up for under $20. And the film? Ten shots for $10. Nostalgia don't come cheap, people. The camera and the film release in May, and if this is how the reborn Polaroid is hoping to stay afloat we're thinking the death of instant film is at hand -- again.

Joby's Gorillapod Magnetic now sticking cameras in unexpected places worldwide

Did you finally run out of precarious places to suspend your camera using an original Gorillapod? We find that hard to believe (did you try the chandelier?) but just the same are happy to inform you that a world of new possibilities is now open with the Gorillapod Magnetic, which is shipping worldwide for $24.95.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i

Canon has done it again. Last year the Canon EOS Rebel T1i ($899.99, ) along with the Nikon D5000 ($729.95, ) led the D-SLR revolution by being the first sub-$1,000 models to offer high-definition video. Capture is limited to 720p, but both cameras are capable of broadcast-quality video. The new EOS Rebel T2i ($899.pp list with 18-55mm IS kit lens) is Canon's update to the T1i, and is currently the only sub-$1,000 D-SLR to offer 1080p30, 1080p24 and 720p60 HD video capture. Its spectacular image quality, versatile video recording options, and relatively low price earn the T2i our Editors' Choice award.

It's Time to Get a New Digital Camera

A little time with a Micro Four Thirds digital camera was enough to convince me it's time to trade up.
Content with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel's 6 megapixels and large 18- to 55-mm lens, I've resisted the siren song of more powerful, multi-megapixel cameras. My Canon was the most expensive camera I'd ever bought. It was also my first and only digital SLR. Prior to owning it, I'd taken analog film shots, with an excellent 35-mm Minolta.

Quantum Cell Phone Camera Tech: Doom for Digicams?

The term "quantum leap" has a double meaning for technology that promises to overhaul cell phone cameras.

http://images.pcworld.com/news/graphics/192023-invisage_quantum_180.jpg

InVisage Technologies, a company based in Menlo Park, California, says its new camera tech could improve mobile phone photo quality fourfold, allowing higher megapixel counts and better low-light images, The New York Times reports. The technology is still in the lab stage, but InVisage wants to build its own sensors and sell them to cell phone makers within the next 18 months.

Olympus E-PL1

Priced at $599.99 (list, with 14-42mm lens), the 12.3-megapixel Olympus E-PL1 sets a new price floor for Micro Four Thirds cameras, putting these smaller D-SLR competitors within reach of photo enthusiasts on tight budgets. The E-PL1 offers excellent image quality in a compact build, but lags behind the competition when it comes to speed and design. The camera suffers from a flimsy build and its focusing speeds don't come close to Panasonic's Micro Four Thirds models, such as the Lumix DMC-GF1 ($899.95, ).

Eight Great Digital Cameras Under $200

With PMA behind us, scores of new digital cameras will hit store shelves in the coming months, but now is the time to scoop up a deal on a top-rated camera you can get today.
The Photo Marketing Association show (PMA), wrapped up last week, and we got a good look at the cameras that will hit stores later this year. Honestly, though, when it comes to compact point-and-shoot cameras at PMA, there wasn't a lot to report. It's the perfect example of a category of products that's mature enough that you don't need the newest model on the market to enjoy a solid shooting experience—especially if you're a casual photographer.
That's not to say that pocket cameras won't continue to evolve in 2010 with improved software, the inclusion of bigger, better sensors, and 1080p video capture in many models. Even so, in most cases, there isn't a single must-have, cutting-edge feature worth holding out for. In fact, if you're looking for a new digital camera now, it's a great time to find a deal as vendors prepare to make room for newer models.
Below you'll find eight capable compact cameras we've reviewed over the past year. Naturally, feature sets vary, and some models perform better than others, but they all take solid photos, are widely available, and can be had for less than $200.
