After getting price and release date information in the UK, Japan and even Canada, Sony has finally seen fit to announce US details for the latest and greatest additions to the BRAVIA LCD lineup. Additionally, the software update to turn on Blu-ray 3D playback and DLNA streaming in its latest players (the out of the box 3D ready BDP-S770 ships next month) is going out today, provided you can find a disc to slip in them -- which you can't until Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs arrives at retail June 22.

SED's dead baby: Canon abandons development of new HDTVs, we take a look back

Oh, surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED). We still remember the halcyon days of 2005 when we first laid eyes upon your black as a CRT / thin as a plasma or LCD self, and equally recognize the pain of each false start and delay that followed, each leading up to today's announcement by Canon that it is abandoning SED HDTVs entirely.

Acer Aspire One 521 and 721 spotted in France handling HD video, eying a croissant

You could say this is one of the odder ways to make somethings official, but Acer's Aspire One 521 and 721 have been deemed just that after surfacing at an event today in France. Just as we'd heard the 10-inch 521, is rocking a heretofore unheard of AMD 1.2GHz V105 (single-core) processor, 160GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, ATI's Radeon HD 4225 GPU and a penchant for handling 1080p video without breaking a sweat. It's also equipped with VGA / HDMI outputs, a media card reader, three USB sockets, audio in / out, Ethernet jack and a native 1,024 x 600 resolution. The 11.6-inch 721, on the other hand, has AMD's newer 1.3GHz Athlon II Neo K325, which similarly sports full HD playback on its 1366x768 resolution screen.

WD TV Live HD gets 'Play To' functionality, full Windows 7 compliance

This silvery-set top box above may look rather drab, but never fear: its next production run will sport a nice, colorful Windows 7 sticker.

That's because Western Digital recently signed an agreement to make its WD TV Live HD network media players compatible with Microsoft's "Play To" feature, allowing you to push media right to your TV from a Windows Media Player 12-equipped PC. While the feature actually snuck its way into firmware revision 1.02.21 in late March, WD only just began trumpeting its inclusion today... possibly to let memories of its disastrous prior update fade.

TiVo has taken its sweet time (about three years) to build its latest DVR, TiVo Premiere ($299.99 list), which takes most of what was good with the TiVo HD ($299.99, ) and updates it with new hardware and software.

Mitsubishi Unisen LT-46249

Mitsubishi boasts unparalleled audio quality from its Unisen series of HDTVs, and the LT-46249 certainly lives up to that claim. With its massive speaker bar and wireless subwoofer, this 46-inch LCD TV produces a wall of sound that comes very close to the quality of a dedicated multi-channel speaker system. There's more to this model than just its audio prowess, however—it displays a crisp, detailed high-definition picture with spot-on colors, and it offers integrated Vudu video-streaming capabilities. I was not as impressed with its standard definition performance however, and found the remote and user interface frustrating. Also, its $2,600 price is expensive for a 46-inch non-LED set too.

HDTV: Even Critters Prefer It

Apparently we aren't the only species to prefer the crisp, smooth picture of an HDTV compared to that from one of those old CRT sets of yesteryear.
A study of octopus behavior (which first surfaced in December 2008 but was revisited in an article by the Journal of Experimental Biology on Friday) shows the mollusks react to high-definition videos where they used to be nonresponsive to movies on a SD set.
Renata Pronk and colleagues from Macquarie University, Australia, decided to see if using and LCD display and HD video would fix the long-time problem.
