In an interview yesterday with The New York Times, Bill Gates was quick to dismiss accusations that Google, his former company's chief rival in much of the online world, is a monopoly. "I wouldn't call anyone a monopolist," he told the paper of record. Rather, the company has been the source of such concern being that it is "hyper-successful," a fate that has befallen a number of companies, including AT&T, IBM, and, uh, Microsoft.
Gates was less kind, however, on the subject of Google's much publicized stand against censorship in the Chinese government. "They've done nothing and gotten a lot of credit for it," he told the paper.
Most countries have controversial policies, Gates added--including the US. "What point are they making? Now, if Google ever chooses to pull out of the United States, then I'd give them credit."
Well, that would certainly address the monopoly issue.
