"Have you heard about about SuperSpeed USB?"
If there was one question I heard more frequently at the Consumer Electronics Show than this one—aside from the obligatory "Will you please get out of my way?"—I have no idea what it was. Component, PC, and peripheral manufacturers just couldn't stop talking about "SuperSpeed USB," better known to most of us as USB 3.0. Considering its capabilities, and the fact that CES 2010 marked the first time it was being widely seen in new products, they have reason to be excited.

USB 3.0 has a transfer rate of 5 Gbps, which makes it about ten times faster than USB 2.0 (which has a transfer rate of 480 Mbps). Because it's so much faster, devices using it consume less power than with USB 2.0 (up to one-third), which can save you money over the long run; it also incorporates lower idle power states, does not broadcast packets, and does not perform device polling.
One of the best things about USB 3.0 is that it's backward compatible with USB 2.0—considering the billions (yes, with a "b") of USB devices on the market, this is a great thing. Even mini and micro USB cables will still work, though unlike the larger USB connector they won't look exactly the same. The new USB mini B connector looks like a combination of USB 2.0 mini and micro jacks—although, of course, it will still accept either of the older version, if (expectedly) at 2.0 speeds. The standard B connection works pretty much the same way, looking like a combination of new and old technology, and happily supporting both.

To coincide with CES, the USB Implementors Forum (USB-IF) certified 17 USB 3.0 products including motherboards from Asus (P6X58D Premium) and Gigaybte (GA-P55A-UD3), notebooks from HP (Envy 15) and Fujitsu (FMV-BIBLO NF/670), and a range of expansion cards, external hard drives, and device silicon.
I caught a couple of demos of USB 3.0 at CES, one from the admittedly partisan USB-IF and one from the component manufacturer Thermaltake, and the results were indeed impressive. Hundreds of megabytes of photos transferred in just seconds under USB 3.0, while USB 2.0 required half a minute or more to move the same amount of data. USB 2.0 has never seemed particularly slow, but USB 3.0 seems to trounce it in just about every way. We'll know more once we put it through our own performance tests, but still it looks like it's off to a promising start.
